Chilgoza Export: Empowering Afghan Employment in Dry Fruit Processing
Aunty Fatima, a daily wage laborer involved in cleaning chilgoza on the outskirts of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, expressed her joy at witnessing an increase in the export of chalgoza to China. The surge in chalgoza exports has generated job opportunities in Afghanistan, with millions of Afghans working to clean and prepare the valuable dried fruit for export. At her workplace, Fatima shared with the interviewer that the export of Chalgoze to China has opened up employment avenues for them. She has been part of this work for the past 6 years, expressing contentment in returning to China as it sustains their livelihood.
Fatima's husband, who is disabled, plays a crucial role in providing daily income for their household. He mentioned that their family consists of 8 members, and for the past 6 years, they have been working alongside their daughters to earn money for necessities such as cooking oil. The export of chalgoza is vital for them, especially given the challenging circumstances.
chilgoza, considered one of the most valuable exports from this war-torn country, currently commands a price of 3,000 Afghanis (approximately 43 US dollars) per kilogram in the local market. However, its value is double in foreign markets. Despite the positive impact on employment, it's noteworthy that chilgoza production has decreased this year. On average, Afghanistan exports more than 5,000 tons of Chalgoose annually, with a significant portion destined for neighboring China.
