Honduras beats Mexico 2-0 in first leg Nations League quarterfinal
Objectives from Anthony Lozano and Bryan Rochez drove Honduras to a 2-0 win against Mexico in the opener of a two-legged Concacaf Countries Association quarterfinal series that will act as a qualifier for the following year's Copa America.
Facilitated in Honduras' Estadio Nacional Chelato Ucles on Friday, the coordination initially started with early confusion for Mexico after a physical issue for goalkeeper and commander Guillermo Ochoa. Unfit to go on in the primary half, Ochoa was subbed out in the 22nd moment for reinforcement Holy messenger Malagon.
Issues for El Tri kept on rising with the home side right away tracking down the back after the replacement.
Following a very much-positioned pass from Luis Palma, striker Lozano gave Honduras a 1-0 lead through an objective in the 30th moment.
Yet again stirred by opening the scoresheet, the Focal Americans tried the net minutes after the fact, constraining Malagon to make his most memorable save of the evening.
Yet again in no time before the halftime whistle, Honduras would verge on scoring after a flung shot from Palma was cleared on the objective line by Mexico fullback Jesús Gallardo.
In the last part, El Tri couldn't determine any of their issues that turned out to be more unmistakable through their languid assault.
Notwithstanding the presentations of winger Uriel Antuna, midfielder Luis Chávez, forward Raúl Jiménez and the introduction of winger Julián Quiñones off the seat, Mexico director Jaime "Jimmy" Lozano was held scoreless against a steadfast Honduras backline.
On the opposite finish of the field, the hosts would then make it 2-0 off an objective from Rochez that followed a sharp run from Jorge Álvarez in the 72nd moment.
Holding solid with a moderate methodology in the last stages, Honduras would proceed to get their 2-0 win by the last whistle.
The two sides will currently meet for the second leg in Mexico on Nov. 21. Not entirely set in stone by total objectives and with away objectives as a potential sudden death round, will fit the bill for the following round of the Countries Association and for the 2024 Copa America.
The terrible quarterfinalists will have one more chance to fit the bill for the Copa America through a solitary disposal play-in match next Spring.
