Major Shake-Up in Pakistan Cricket: Babar Azam Resigns as Captain Across Formats, Muhammad Hafeez Appointed Team Director

Babar Azam has resigned from captaincy in all three formats, with Shaun Masood taking over as Test captain and Shaheen Shah Afridi appointed captain for T20Is. The ODI captaincy is yet to be determined. Following the disappointing World Cup performance, the fate of foreign coaches has been finalized, with Muhammad Hafeez replacing Mickey Arthur as the team director. Details reveal that he shared this information on social media in his message.

Babar Azam wrote that even today I clearly remember the moment when I received a call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. In the last 4 years, I have seen many ups and downs on and off the field, but with full dedication, I have tried to uphold the dignity and honor of Pakistan in the world of cricket. Reaching the number one position in white ball cricket was the result of the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management. I would like to thank the Pakistani fans for their unwavering support during this journey. I am giving up the captaincy of Pakistan in all formats, it is a difficult decision but I feel that this is the right time, I will represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats, and support the new captain and the team with my expertise. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to PCB for entrusting me with this important responsibility.

On the other hand, the Pakistan Cricket Board appointed Shan Masood as the captain for the ICC Test Championship 2023-25. Shaheen Shah Afridi will take charge in T20. On the other hand, Chairman PCB Management Committee Zaka Ashraf says that Babar Azam is truly a world-class batsman and our asset, we respect his decision. He is a role model for the current generation of cricketers. We want him to grow as a player. Will continue to support them. Without the added burden of captaincy, they can focus more on their performance to reach greater heights.

The National Cricket Academy limited foreigners to the playing staff, with Muhammad Hafeez taking on the role of team director. At the discussion in Gaddafi Stadium yesterday, the Chairman Management Committee expressed a lack of confidence in the coaches' performance. The PCB press release later confirmed Mohammad Hafeez's appointment as team director, with the coaching staff restricted to the National Cricket Academy, including Director Mickey Arthur. An official announcement regarding Wahab Riaz becoming Chief Selector is anticipated shortly, and Yunus Khan may also be assigned a responsibility.
