Empowering Farmers: New Policy Shifts Pricing Authority for Milk, Beef, and Goat Meat to the Private Sector

The Federal Ministry of Food Security has formulated a policy that grants farmers and producers the authority to determine the prices of milk, beef, and goat meat. The policy, which delegates the responsibility of price determination for these crucial commodities to the private sector, has been transmitted to the Punjab province. This move aims to offer an opportunity for farmers to exercise the option of reducing the prices of all three commodities.

The government's fixed pricing for these commodities hampers private investment while empowering the private sector to set prices is expected to stimulate increased production. Allowing markets to establish their own prices will foster a competitive environment and contribute to price reductions.

Government-set prices for these commodities, below the cost of production, discourage overall production. A significant portion, 90%, of cattle rearers are in low-income brackets. The objective of price fixing is to extend a subsidy to society at large, with poultry and fish being more affordable than goat and beef due to the absence of fixed pricing.
