Supreme Court's Pivotal Week: Key Cases and Hearings Unveiled

The upcoming week is poised to be of significant importance in the Supreme Court, with a roster of crucial cases scheduled for hearings. On December 13, the Supreme Court will deliberate on intra-court appeals filed by the federal government and the Ministry of Defense, challenging the trials of civilians in military courts. Following this, on December 15, the court is set to hear the applications of Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi.

Adding to the legal docket, the proceedings of the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto reference court will be made available on the website. Noteworthy decisions were made during the meeting of the three-member committee of the Supreme Court, chaired by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa. The committee, which includes Justice Tariq Masood and Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan, discussed pivotal matters.

A separate three-member bench, led by Justice Tariq Masood, is scheduled to address petitions against the eviction of illegal citizens on December 12, with Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Ayesha Malik also participating. Among the petitioners is Farhatullah Babar. Simultaneously, the court has slated the hearing of review petitions challenging the transfer of welfare land to the commercial category in Karachi. This hearing, led by a three-member bench headed by Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan, is set for December 11, with notices issued to all parties, including the Sindh government.

The Supreme Court had previously nullified the conversion of public land into residential and commercial categories, leading to the filing of revision petitions in 2019. In 2010, former Nazim Karachi Nimatullah Khan initiated an appeal against the alteration of the category of public land.
